Babergh Offers Local Knowledge to Help County Re-house Voluntary Groups

Babergh District Council has offered to help efforts to relocate a number of Hadleigh-based voluntary groups, should Suffolk County Council decide not to renew the lease on its community centre at East House.

Babergh owns the property with the County Council holding a 10 year lease which is shortly due to expire. The County Council in turn has allocated rooms to a number of voluntary groups. Indications suggest, however, that the County Council may not renew the lease when it expires in January 2006.

Tim Mutum, Babergh’s Head of Leisure & Community Services explained that “Babergh understands that the new administration at Suffolk County Council is reviewing all of its spending options and that one result may be that they decide not to continue using East House. We obviously respect the rationale for such a decision and Babergh Councillors will have to weigh up the various competing interests of users and Council Taxpayers once the County Council finally reveals its intentions”.

Babergh receives an annual rental of £35,000 – equivalent to 1% of the Babergh part of the Council Tax. In the event of this revenue being reduced, the shortfall may have to be recouped via the Council Tax.

In order to help Suffolk County Council find new accommodation for the various voluntary bodies which sub-let parts of East House, Babergh has offered to use its local knowledge of Hadleigh to identify alternative accommodation, should that be useful.

“This Council is keen to emphasise that it wants to co-operate with all to achieve a solution which balances the needs of the groups with those of all Council Taxpayers. We know it won’t be easy to find suitable accommodation, but we will help out as best we can. We look forward to helping the County Council should that be necessary” concluded Tim Mutum.

Babergh Calls in Architects for Damaged 'Vandal Resistant' Loo

Babergh District Council, aware of local concerns about continued vandalism to the Magdalen Road public toilets in Hadleigh, has written to the architects to see how the 'vandal resistant' structure can be repaired.

“Whilst the real responsibility for such damage obviously lies with the anti-social elements who commit vandalism, Babergh is keen to engage the ideas of the designers of the toilets – who also specified the materials used” explained Jonas Grist, Babergh’s Technical Officer (Waste).

Babergh is currently monitoring CCTV footage in an attempt to identify the vandals, but is also keen to repair the damage as quickly as possible to deter further destruction.

“Babergh backed the design on the basis that it would be vandal resistant and we are keen to explore how to put the damage right at no extra cost to Council Taxpayers. We are looking forward to a dialogue with the architects, Wincer Kievenaar, in the hope that they can provide a solution to this issue”.

"
TO OUR FRIENDS AND PEOPLE OF HADLEIGH

Well on the 18th July at around 11-00 a.m. we arrived back in Hadleigh and crossed the line (being Barclays Bank the entrance} to have covered in the 44 days + a few hours away a distance of 3,509 miles.

We have raised somewhere in the region, while travelling a total of £593.  This of course is not the total and June and I would hope that by next month’s issue of the magazine full and final account can be stated so that all you good people who have overwhelmed us with your kindness, can rightly give yourselves a little pat on the back, and well deserved we both think.

We would like to mention here once again of course the support given to us throughout by Barclays Bank (especially the girls!) who of course are meeting us half way, pound for pound up to £3,500.

The photos this month is of  both of us at John-O-Groats which of course is 874 miles in a straight line, and we have been awarded the certificate for carrying this out, by the End to End club of Great Britain.    We did it the hard way, but “Boy what a trip”.

Once again both June and myself thank you all for your kindness.

Please Note: (tongue in cheek!) ha – I will be coming for the pledged donations!

John G and Junie B"
